Community What is it?

I heard some women talking the other day about their community and it made me think about my own values as far as community goes. The way these people were talking they all helped each other and mixed at barbeques etc That's what started me thinking. I live in the same place and yet I have never been spoken to by these people who were saying "What a great community!". I see their idea of community as a clique and that's fine too of course we are going to select our friends on the basis of common interests compatibility etc. But please don't call it a community because it's not. A community is when you help people you don't know just because you can,you may be there at the right moment to help an older member of the community a hand getting their groceries home. You pick up fishing line, plastic bags etc without needing a pat on the back for it or fall back on the old cliche "its not my job why should I do it?" You do it because you are part of a community and everything effects everyone else. I tend to notice that many people who call themselves community minded often have their own agendas which usually means they want to sell their property or value add to it in one way or another. I must admit I felt like saying to these people. When was the last time you spoke to or did something for a stranger? When was the last time you committed a random act of kindness for some-one who isn't a part of your community
